1:00 pm Jean Chapin – “The Secret Life of Roses”
Jean Chapin is an international garden designer, speaker, and community educator known for bringing horticultural science to life with warmth, wit, and practical wisdom. He’s currently the President of the Linn County Master Gardeners Association and has spent decades creating gardens, leading workshops, and inspiring others to grow with confidence and joy. His personal gardens in Lebanon and Ireland are regularly open for tours. His presentations blend real-world experience with fresh insights, making complex plant behavior both fascinating and accessible. In The Secret Life of Roses, Jean reveals how roses grow, respond, and “make decisions”—helping gardeners see their roses, and their results, in a whole new way.
1:45 pm Dave Kollen – “The Night Shift”
Dave Kollen is a Xerces Society Ambassador and in that role is involved in educational and outreach work. In addition, he is an OSU Extension certified Master Melittologist, Bee Steward, and Oregon Naturalist. His involvement in community science includes the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas, the California Bumble Bee Atlas, and the Oregon Bee Atlas. Dave also writes pollinator-focused articles for the Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs newsletter, Mahonia.
2:30 pm Shirley Betournay – “Vertical Gardening”
Shirley Betournay retired from the public schools after a 37-year career with middle school age children. Her community service included Adaptive Recreation, Mobility International, Red Cross, and Safe Place. She joined the Master Gardeners Program in 2012 and is now involved in four “Specialist” committees. Shirley is also Co-chair of the Adaptive Gardening Committee, and a mentor/ trainer for new Master Gardener trainees. Shirley can always be found in her 365-tiered garden that includes year-round vegetables, as well as numerous native plants, and pollinator circles.
